The ERMI (Environmental Relative Mouldiness Index) is our most established dust-based mould assessment. It analyses settled dust to provide a broader picture of mould contamination within your indoor environment.

Unlike air sampling, which provides a snapshot of what is airborne at the time of testing, dust analysis can provide insight into mould that has accumulated within the property over time.

The ERMI analyses 26 water-damage indicator moulds and 10 common environmental moulds, helping to identify whether species associated with water-damaged buildings are present and at what levels.

Your test also includes a FREE HERTSMI-2 score, calculated from five specific mould species. HERTSMI-2 is commonly used alongside ERMI and may be particularly relevant for individuals investigating mould exposure in relation to CIRS (Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome).

HOW TO TAKE YOUR SAMPLE

Collect settled dust using the supplied Swiffer from approximately 10 suitable locations within the area you wish to test. Full step-by-step instructions are included with your kit.

For the best results
  • Wear the supplied gloves when collecting your sample.
  • We recommend using one Swiffer per room for the most accurate location-specific results.
  • If your aim is simply to establish whether there is a mould problem within the property, one Swiffer may be used across multiple rooms.
  • Prioritise rooms with known or suspected water damage, rooms that worsen symptoms, or rooms used most frequently.
Important
  • One kit contains one Swiffer and therefore one laboratory sample.
  • Do not cut the Swiffer, as this creates multiple samples which may incur additional laboratory charges.
  • If several rooms are combined into one sample, the results cannot identify which individual room contains the mould.
When should I collect the sample?

If possible, clean the property first and allow 6–8 weeks for fresh dust to accumulate before sampling. This provides a good representation of the current environment.

However, this is not essential. Existing dust can still provide valuable information when investigating historical contamination, a recent water damage event, or when results are required sooner.
